October was an excellent month for me. I released Midnight Falls and it seems to have been well received based on the favorable feedback and reviews. I had a successful promotion, and I finally feel like those that continued with the series really are starting to get me and the series. But with all the questions answered in Midnight Falls, there still seem to be so many more. So let's have a Q&A.
When will Book 4 be out?
My goal is February, and when I say this I mean it is my intention to do so, but sometimes thing just don’t go as expected.
Why February, what takes you so long?
I work full-time as a physical therapist. I get up at 4 a.m. in order to work out (because I can’t seem to create the zero calorie pizza, and the M&M diet was an internet hoax—damn!) and write for an hour before I go to work. I try to write a little after work, but most of the time I am too tired. During the weekends I spend hours writing.
Once the book is complete, it still has to go to my beta readers. After I make the recommended changes then it goes to my developmental editor. He goes through it, fusses and pulls out his hair and possibly considers looking into another profession and then returns it to me. I make the changes and then he edits. After he edits, then the book goes to a proofreader.
Yep, the book goes through all of that before it gets to you, and sadly, through all that, I still find a couple of errors. If they frustrate you, imagine how I feel :). While I am writing, making corrections and communicating with my editors and proofreaders, I still have to work with my cover artist to give her feedback on the cover. There are so many things at play that a delay in one thing throws the whole system off. But I give you my word, I am always trying to meet my deadline.
What happened to Chris’ Series?
Hmm, I thought you hated her, now you like her? (Just kidding. Not really.) For a while I put her book on the back burner. I didn’t have it in me to write her. People hate her and I felt it was a huge imposition to ask my readers to follow her series. I discuss it in depth in this blog. But after reading Barry Eisler’s John Rain series and the encouragement of my editor, beta readers, readers that contacted me to tell me how much they loved all three books, I’m back at work on the Chris series. (Hey readers, where were you when I was getting all the hate mail and catching all the shade about Darkness Unchained ? :)) So, my friends, I decided to move forward with it.
Now I am in a place mentally and artistically to really do her story justice and I am confident that, although some will continue to hate her, most of you all will understand her and dare I say—maybe even like her.
I hate Michaela, you should kill her.
Hey, violence isn’t always the answer. But isn’t fun to hate her?
I love Ethan, what's next for him?
I am glad you asked. You are the coolest student in the class. Actually, several people have written me inquiring about a book from Ethan’s POV. I thought it was a splendid idea. But you just read what my schedule is like, and I just don’t have the time to do it at the moment. But I have a friend and fellow writer that really wanted to take on the task. Mason Reed will be writing a couple of scenes from Ethan’s POV and I will be posting them on my website. We welcome your feedback about it.
I say this with true sincerity: I welcome your feedback. I will admit that doing this was very hard. I don’t have children and I imagine how I felt when I agreed to this is how some mothers feel about leaving their child with a babysitter. I handed Ethan off to Mason and with the hopes that he would take care of the character the way I would and at the same time take care of you, the reader, as well. I read the first several scenes and I’m very comfortable handing this over to him and I hope you like them as much as I do. Ethan's POV can be viewed here.
Josh, Quell, Steven and Ethan—Sky has such great chemistry with them, which one will she end up with?
I think with everything that has developed in the story between Ethan and Sky, it is a safe guess to assume they will get together. But as you can see, the story is unfolding in a very unique and complicated way and it would be hard for me to give a definitive answer. But I can definitely say, it will not be Steven. Their bond and relationship, to me, seems like that between siblings and there isn’t any romantic chemistry. As I have stated many times before, the muse can take you anywhere, but I can’t imagine what type of rollercoaster, crazy ride it would take me on to have them end up as a couple.
I love Sable and Gavin, will they get a story?
Really?! Sable and Gavin? For goodness sake, get some help. Actually, Sable and Gavin are another set of characters that are fun and challenging to write. People are strangely drawn to them. At this time I doubt they will get a book, but if you have a story you would like to tell, bring it. I would absolutely love to hear your ideas.
Skylar needs a boyfriend, when is that going to happen?
Hmm, I don’t know. Each relationship she has with the men in her life (Steven, Quell, Josh and Ethan) and a unique layer to the story. I really have to see where the muse will take me. Yes, Ethan is an easy choice and there is chemistry, but I’m not sure if he is the one she will ultimately be with.
OMG, what happened between Ethan and Sky? How could he do that to her?
No spoilers on my blog. But if we are talking about the same scene, I will tell you that Ethan is a very calculating man and Skylar is very emotional. I think Ethan made the right choice because of the complication it would have caused.
How many books will there be in the series?
I wish I could give you an exact number, but I can’t. As the story unfolds, I often get more ideas, which can’t be done in a single book. Initially I wanted just five, then that increased to six. I decided not to restrict myself to a number and to end the story when I feel that Sky’s story has been adequately told.
Keep the questions coming and I will try to have a Q&A every so often to answer you!
