I should give a speech here, shouldn’t I? Something profound about why I started the blog. Hmmm, let me think about it... I got nothing. I will probably use this to discuss my books, the writing process, my life (don’t get too excited about that one—I’m pretty boring). Besides dressing up like Wonder Woman and fighting crime on the weekend (let’s keep that a secret), I work full-time as a physical therapist, work out (I plan to run a marathon next year), and write—a lot. Not too exciting. But, if I finally make that zero-calorie pizza that I’ve been working on, then I plan to blog about that for days.
Moon Tortured was published thirteen months ago, and since then, I’ve had the special pleasure of receiving wonderful letters from readers, great and not-so-great reviews, and feedback and questions that I absolutely love.
Let’s have fun with my first post and have a Q &A. Some are actual questions, responses, messages I’ve received, and some are questions I made up but are based on various things others have asked me.
I love Skylar!?
Thank you, I really hoped I have created a likable character. Fun fact: initially her name was Olivia (Levy for short), but then Scandal came out and I had to make a quick change. I love the show, but Skylar is very different from Olivia Pope. So Levy was buried and Skylar was born.
I hate Skylar, why is she so stupid?
Ouch! I will admit, Skylar was written to be naïve, emotional, and a little helpless. As an author, I always try to avoid the things I hate as a reader. Skylar has lived a sheltered life. She isn’t going to be a kick-ass heroine coming out of the gate. But with each book, she evolves into a character I hope that you love and that you see her strength, maturity, and self-reliance evolve into something you can appreciate.
Ethan’s a jerk, why do I like him so much?
I don’t know, maybe you should discuss that with your therapist. Hehehe. Ethan is a character that is hard to hate. Just when you are at the end of your rope with his caustic, arrogant, narcissistic behavior, he does something sweet that pulls you right back in. Isn’t that how most bad boys are? I am just the author, which means I simply write whatever the character tells me to.
Ethan is hiding something, what?
Aww, I wish I could tell you. Here’s a hint, it is in Midnight Falls.
There is chemistry between Skylar and Quell, Josh and Ethan. Who will Skylar end up with?
Good question, I can’t wait until I know too. Like I said, I am just a vessel; the characters write their story. But this vessel can be steered in the direction you like with the right storyline. If you have a pitch, I would love to hear it.
Gavin and Sable are sadistic and weird, should they be a couple?
Hmm. You’re odd, I like you. Let’s have lunch. Wait…you like dark, sadistic murderers, let’s postpone that. They are an intriguing combination. I will admit they are fascinating in a disturbing way. Gavin is one of my favorite characters, and I can’t wait to see how his story plays out. I doubt they will end up as a couple—but…you never know where the story will go.
You sure like interior design, what is wrong with you?
John is that you? If you have a question, just email me. John is my editor and I absolutely adore him, but he has mentioned it several times that I pay a lot of attention to the characters’ homes. There is a method to my madness, although it is more madness than method. Like clothing, a person’s décor tells a lot about their personality. Describing their home gives the reader insight into the character's personality.
Chris is getting her own series, why? I hate her!
Again, ouch! As a reader, I can see why people hate her—she isn’t very likeable. Now, as an author, I find her fascinating. She and Quell are a study of the human condition. I was hesitant to do Darkness Unchained the way I did, but I needed a way to tell the vampires’ side of the story and she was the best way. As I wrote her, I found myself thinking about her world, the world she came from, and how she had to survive. She is a wonderfully complex character, and in the end, the readers may not love her, but I hope they end up liking and understanding her enough to follow her story.
This was pretty fun. I think I will do it again. If you have any questions for me or the characters, feel free to contact me. Midnight Falls will be published September 15th, 2015, and I promise that at least some of the questions in the first two books will be answered. I apologize for delaying it. My goal is to always produce the best book possible. I had to change proofreaders, which delayed my project. I think you will be very happy with the final result. Don’t forget to sign up for my mailing list and "like" my Facebook page to stay up to date with contests, giveaways, and promotions. And thanks to all my readers, and to all of the wonderful feedback in your reviews, whether good or bad. Feel free to contact me.
